The Grammy-nominated countertenor Andreas Scholl has received numerous awards and honours, including the Culture Prize of the State of Hesse, the ECHO Klassik Award, the Gramophone Classical Music Award and the Edison Award. He was the first countertenor ever to perform at the Last Night of the Proms.
Over the course of a career spanning more than three decades, he has released a series of outstanding solo albums, includingWanderer with Tamar Halperin; the Purcell album O Solitude with Accademia Bizantina; Arias for Senesino; Heroes, featuring arias by Handel, Mozart, Hasse and Gluck; Robert Dowland’s A Musicall Banquet; Arcadia; Wayfaring Stranger with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra; Bach cantatas with the Basel Chamber Orchestra; and Vivaldi motets with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. His discography also includes Handel’s Solomon and Saul with Paul McCreesh, Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater, and Caldara’sMaddalena ai piedi di Cristo.
His DVD releases include productions of Giulio Cesare, Rodelinda and Partenope.
Recent highlights include concert performances of Handel’s Giulio Cesare with Cecilia Bartoli and a new production for the Theatre in Ostrava; performances of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with Divino Sospiro in Madrid, with Red Dot Baroque in Singapore and with Ensemble Barrocada in Israel and Turkey; concerts and masterclasses at the Kyiv Baroque Fest; a tour featuring works by František Ignác Tůma with the Czech Ensemble Baroque at the Spring Festival in Brno and Holešov; Caldara’s La concordia de’ pianeti at the Znojmo Music Festival; duo recitals with lutenist Edin Karamazov; the project If Music Be the Food of Love with Maarten Engeltjes and Ensemble PRJCT Amsterdam; and concerts featuring the program Invocazioni Mariane with Accademia Bizantina, released on CD by naïve.
He performed his signature role of Giulio Cesare at his debut with Oper Frankfurt, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and at the 2012 Salzburg Festival, where he again appeared alongside Cecilia Bartoli. As Bertarido in Rodelinda he made his debuts at the Glyndebourne Festival and the Metropolitan Opera, opposite Renée Fleming. In concert he has appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and all of the world’s leading Baroque ensembles.
He is also a regular guest with numerous chamber ensembles, including the Basel Chamber Orchestra, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, the Tel Aviv Soloists and the Vienna Morphing Orchestra, with whom he explored the works of Arvo Pärt. A joint recording project is also planned.
