Carlo Vistoli studied guitar and piano before beginning his training as a countertenor in 2007 with William Matteuzzi and Sonia Prina. He won numerous prizes at major competitions and joined the Jardin des Voix of Les Arts Florissants under the direction of William Christie in 2015. This led to engagements in major productions at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and the Teatro Regio in Turin. In 2017, John Eliot Gardiner cast him as Ottone (L’incoronazione di Poppea) for the extensive “Monteverdi 450” tour, which included performances in Berlin, Edinburgh, Lucerne, Paris, Salzburg, Venice, Chicago, and New York.
His roles have included Idraspe in Cavalli’s Erismena at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Ruggiero in Vivaldi’s Orlando furioso at La Fenice, and Ottone at the Salzburg Festival. He also appeared in Sciarrino’s Luci mie traditrici in Venice, Handel’s Semele on tour with Gardiner, Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome in a production by Robert Carsen, and at the Komische Oper Berlin in a new production by Damiano Michieletto.
Further engagements include Cavalieri’s La rappresentazione di Anima e di Corpo at the Theater an der Wien, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater alongside Cecilia Bartoli, Rossini’s Petite Messe solennelle in Brussels and Paris, and Handel’s Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno at the Baden-Baden Easter Festival with the Berlin Philharmonic under Emmanuelle Haïm. In 2022, he sang Ruggiero (Alcina) in Florence, Tolomeo in a new production of Handel’s Giulio Cesare at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées under Philippe Jaroussky, and Nerone (L’incoronazione di Poppea) at the Berlin State Opera. In the 2023/24 season, he returned to Berlin as Farnace in Mozart’s Mitridate and made his U.S. debut at San Francisco Opera as Arsace in Handel’s Partenope.
At the Vienna State Opera, he appeared alongside Cecilia Bartoli in the title role of Handel’s Giulio Cesare, and performed as Alidoro in Cesti’s Orontea at La Scala in Milan (musical direction: Giovanni Antonini, staging: Robert Carsen).
Carlo Vistoli has participated in numerous recordings for various labels, including Arcana, Brilliant, Erato, La Música, and harmonia mundi.
