Chiara D’Anna is an internationally renowned Italian director, writer, actress, and scholar. Born near Turin, she trained in Italy, Poland, and the UK, initially studying geology before moving into physical theatre. Her wide-ranging projects span adaptations of plays and novels, theatre, site-specific immersive work, multimedia performances, dance-theatre, opera, and film. Her productions have been praised for their originality, creativity, and striking visual style.
Recent directorial credits include co-directing Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss with Iván Fischer (Budapest Festival Orchestra), and Brainland Opera, a short film that won multiple awards including Best Story at Toronto’s Experimental Film & Music Video Festival and the Special Jury Prize at the 2024 Messina Opera Film Festival.
Chiara made her film debut in Peter Strickland’s Berberian Sound Studio (2012), followed by a co-lead role in The Duke of Burgundy(2014). Her most recent film credit is the multi-award-winning Everyone is Going to Die (2024).
Renowned for her work in Commedia dell’arte and physical theatre, Chiara currently teaches at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and Goldsmiths, University of London, as well as at the Accademia dell’Arte in Arezzo, Italy.
