I Porporini

I Porporini was founded in 2018 by Philipp Mathmann and Gerd Amelung. The name I Porporini refers to composer and vocal teacher Nicola Antonio Porpora, one of the most influential figures in European art music in the early 18th century. His school produced some of the most celebrated singers of the time, including the castrati Antonio Uberti (who named himself Porporino in honor of his teacher), Farinelli (Carlo Broschi), and Caffarelli (Gaetano Majorano). The ensemble seeks to revive the cultural legacy of this era, and its name pays tribute to the achievements of “the great masters of the past.”

The repertoire of I Porporini spans the rich and diverse music of Italy and Germany from 1700 to 1750.

Countertenor Philipp Mathmann and experienced ensemble director and harpsichordist Gerd Amelung share a long-standing musical collaboration across a variety of projects. This partnership led, in 2018, to the idea of founding an ensemble together with leading figures from Germany’s early music scene – such as violinist Kerstin Linder-Dewan, lutenist Axel Wolf, and others.
