Markellos Chryssicos studied harpsichord with M. Dalmati in Athens. He then continued his studies in Paris with S. Romeo and O. Baumont, in Salzburg with K. Gilbert and S. Rampe, and in Geneva with Ch. Jaccottet, whose last student he was.
As a soloist and continuo player he regularly performs in renowned concert halls. As a musical assistant and vocal coach, he has participated in several award-winning recordings and stage productions, including Handel’s Arianna in Creta, Tamerlano, Giulio Cesare, and Alessandro Severo, Gluck’s Il trionfo di Clelia (MDG), as well as Baroque Divas (Sony) and Handel’s Alessandro, Siroe, and Arminio (Decca).
After building a broad repertoire ranging from early madrigals to Mozart’s operas, he founded the early music ensemble Latinitas Nostra, making unusual musical combinations his hallmark. This is evident in projects such as An English Traveller into the Levant, featuring music from the Elizabethan era and the Ottoman Empire (Athens Festival 2013), and …for soon I will be layed in earth…, which brings together French Leçons des Ténèbres and rebetiko music (Onassis Cultural Center 2015). His productions of Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea and Stradella’s San Giovanni Battista were highlighted as among the most outstanding events of the Athens Epidaurus Festival. His two-CD opera album L’Olimpiade (Naïve) with the Venice Baroque Orchestra received the Classica Award.
As a conductor, Markellos Chryssicos regularly collaborates with Armonia Atenea, the Athens State Orchestra, the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra and ensembles such as the Irish Baroque Orchestra (Handel’s Ariodante in Dublin).
His recordings with Latinitas Nostra include the album Lamento, featuring 17th-century music with mezzo-soprano Romina Basso (Naïve), and I Dilettanti with Spanish countertenor Xavier Sabata (Aparté), awarded by Melómano de Oro.
Further engagements include a Handel program at the Halle Handel Festival with tenor Juan Sancho, a concert at London’s Wigmore Hall with Daniel Behle and Armonia Atenea, Handel’s Publio Cornelio Scipione at Theater an der Wien and a production of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen at the Greek National Opera. In 2023, he appeared at the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival with Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo.
