Sonja Runje studied at the University of Zagreb with Martina Gojčeta Silić and was for a short time tutored by Eva Blahova in Bratislava. She has already sung such parts as Sesto (La clemenza di Tito), Smeraldine, Linetta and Nicoletta (Love to the Three Oranges), Isabella (L’Italiana in Algeri), Calipso (Polifemo), Bradamante (Orlando furioso), Disinganno (Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno), Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus), Orfeo (Orfeo ed Euridice), Olga (Eugen Onegin), Mércèdes (Carmen) and Maddalena (Rigoletto). At present she is appearing primarily in the works of George Frideric Handel, among other venues at the Savonlinna Festival, the Garsington Festival, also in Rijeka and St. Gallen.
Among the works in which Sona Runje has been heard during her regular appearances as oratorio and concert soloist are Bach’s Mass in B Minor and the cantatas Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen and Süßer Trost, mein Jesus kömmt, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Stabat Mater, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Handel’s Messiah and Dixit Dominus, Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Mozart’s Requiem and Missa brevis in B-flat Major, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Schubert’s Winterreise, Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël, Mahler’s 2nd Symphony, Duruflé’s Requiem and Boris Papandopulos’ Croatian Mass. She works regularly with renowned conductor including Georg Petrou, Christian Curnyn, Rubén Dubrovsky and Niksa Bareza.
The 2021/22 season includes plans for appearances in Vivaldi’s Orlando furioso at the Klangvokalfestival Dortmund and in Paris, also Dido and Aeneas in Helsinki. In 2021 Sonja Runje will make her debut at the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival.
