Verena Spies

Her repertoire includes a wide range of solos, chamber music and orchestra literature.

Born in Hannover (Germany), Verena Spies started taking cello lessons with Yasuko Ogata at the Music School Hemmingen.

As multiple prize-winner of the competition Jugend musiziert, she was scholarship holder of the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung and awardee of the Bürgerstiftung Hemmingen.

2013 she started her music studies on the Violoncello with Antonio Meneses at the University of the Arts Bern, and graduated with the Bachelor of Arts in 2016. Subsequenly Verena studied with Lucia Swarts in the Master‘s degree program at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where she graduated with the degree Master of Music (Violoncello and Baroque cello) in 2018.

Additionally she took part at several masterclasses working i.a. with Klaus Storck, Laszlo Fenyö, Viola de Hoog, Sigiswald Kuijken and Guido Larisch. Further artistic impulses for her stemmed from Albert Brüggen, Jaap ter Linden, Lucy van Dael and Wilbert Hazelzet.

During her time in the Netherlands Verena has performed in several early music orchestras, including the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Holland Baroque, as well as the world’s oldest Baroque ensemble Nederlandse Bachvereniging. For the season 2017/2018 she was a Young Bach Fellow of the Nederlandse Bachvereniging. With chamber music Verena performed at the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht Fringe, the MonteverdiXL Festival and the Geelvinck Fortepiano Festival.

Recently she is giving concerts i.a. with Concerto Inspirato, Hannoversche Hofkapelle, Trio Grazioso and the Göttinger Barockorchester.

To integrate music with social engagement Verena worked as a volunteer for one month (July 2016) in the social project Música que Transforma at the Music School Tehillah in Nazária (Piaui / Brazil) giving lessons, workshops and concerts.
